법칙 3: '단어와 구를 바꿔 말하라'

 

Sally has lots of animals on her bed. 

She has an elephant, a tiger, and a bear.

She has too many and I have a few.

But you have a lot of puzzles and games.

 

위의 대화는 아이들이 엄마에게 동사 have를 사용하면서 뒤에 나오는단어만 바꿔 쓴 예이다.

한 문장으로 바꿔 말할 수 있는 범위는 엄청나다.

 

실제로 영어회화를 가르치다 보면How old are you?를 이해했던 학생들이 How old is your sister?라고 하면

무슨 말을 해야 할지 몰라 얼굴만 멀뚱멀뚱쳐다볼 때가 있다.

영어회화 왕초보들은 좀 외울 줄은 알지만 바꿔 말하는 데 매우 서투르다.

바꿔 말할 시도조차 하지 못한다.

 

예를 들어 I'd like to have Coke(콜라 주세요)의 문장에서

Coke라는 단어만 바꿔 말해도 아래와 같이 많은 문장을 만들어낼 수 있다.

I'd like to have a ticket. 표 주세요.

I'd like to have this. 이것 주세요.

I'd like to have another one. 다른 것 주세요.

I'd like to have a room. 방 주세요.

I'd like to have a receipt. 영수증 주세요.

I'd like to have a discount. 할인해 주세요.

I'd like to have an Internet connection. 인터넷 연결을 해 주세요.

 

또 같은 문장에서 have Coke라는 구(두 단어 이상)만 바꾸어 말해도자신의 의사를 완벽하게 표현할 수 있다.

I'd like to call her. 그 여자에게 전화를 걸고 싶습니다.

I'd like to ask you a question.  질문을 하고 싶습니다.

I'd like to exchange won for dollars. 원화를 달러화로 환전하고 싶습니다.

I'd like to send this package to Korea. 이 소포를 한국에 보내고 싶습니다.

I'd like to pay with my credit card. 신용카드로 계산하고 싶습니다.

I'd like to wake up at six tomorrow. 내일 6시에 일어나고 싶습니다.

I'd like to know how to use this vending machine. 이 자판기를 어떻게 사용하는지 알고 싶습니다. 

 

이처럼 단어와 구를 바꿔 말하는 것은 언어를 익히며 확장하는 가장 좋은 방법이다.

말하기의 상황이 한 두 개일 수 없듯 모든 표현을 외워서 말할 수는 없기 때문에

단어와 구를 바꿔 말하는훈련을 하면 여러 상황에서 많은 말을 만들 수 있는 것이다.

 

I am a bus driver에서 a bus driver를 a photographer(사진사), a graphic designer(그래픽 디자이너),

a  professional gamer.(프로게이머)의 신분을 나타내는 다른 말로 바꿀 수 있다.

 

또   happy, sad, excited 를붙여 I am happy(행복하다), I'm sad(슬프다), I am excited(신난다)처럼

상태를 나타내는 말로 바꾸어 말할 수도 있다.

 

따라서 자꾸 외우려는것만이 능사가 아니다.

보다 중요한 사실은 이미 알고 있는 것과 외운 것을 얼마나 잘 활용하느냐이다.

단어와 구 바꿔 말하기에대한 인식과 실천의 차이가 영어회화 실력의 차이이다.      

 

   

바꿔 말하기는 영어의 말문이 터지는데 가장 효과적인 방법중에 하나다.

우리가 알고 있는 문장의 단어나 구를 바꿔 넣어 필요한 말을 할 수 있기 때문이다.

또한 법칙 3을 반복 훈련하는 동안 필요한 문장들이 자연스레 외워지게 된다.

In the Office

 

 

Dialogue

 

Ms. Smith: Would you take this file to Mr. Roberts in the personnel office?

 

Mike: Yes, I would. It's on the fifth floor, isn't it?

 

Ms. Smith: Yes, it is.

 

Mike: What does he look like?

 

Ms. Smith: He is very tall with glasses.

 

Mike: I'm supposed to pick up Ms. Johnson at the airport this afternoon.

 

Ms. Smith: Are you going to meet her at three o'clock?

 

Mike: No, I'm not. It will be four o'clock. Did you say, "She is in her fifties, average height with short black curly hair?"

 

Ms. Smith: Yes,  I did.  She is a middle-aged woman with short black hair.

 

 

 

Situation 1

 

Ms. Smith: Would you take this file to Mr. Roberts in the personnel office?

Mike: Yes, I would. It's on the fifth floor, isn't it?

Ms. Smith: Yes, it is.

 

Smith: 이 서류를 인사과의 로버츠씨에게 갖다 주시겠어요?

Mike:네, 그러죠.  5층이죠?

Ms. Smith: 네, 맞아요.

Ms. Smith: Would you take this file to Mr. Roberts?

1. bring me a blanket, 2. show me another one, 3. give me some napkins

Mike: What does he look like?

Ms. Smith: He is very tall with glasses.

 

Mike: 어떻게 생긴 분이시죠?

Ms. Smith: 키가 크고 안경을 쓴 분이에요.

1. she, 2. Brian, 3 . your sister

  

 

 

Situation 3

 

Mike: I'm supposed to pick up Ms. Johnson at the airport this afternoon.

Ms. Smith: Are you going to meet her at three o'clock?

Mike: No, I'm not. It will be four o'clock.

 

Mike: 저는 오늘 오후에 Johnson씨 데리러 공항에 나가기로 되어 있습니다.

Smith: 오후 세 시에 만나나요?

Mike: 아니요. 네 시에요.   

  

법칙 3. 단어와 구 바꾸기

1. meet him at two o'clock, 2. go there by 5,  3. call him

 

 

 

Situation 4

 

Mike: Did you say, "She is in her fifties, average height with short black curly hair?" 

Ms. Smith: Yes,  I did.  She is a middle-aged woman with short black hair.

 

Mike: Johnson씨는 50대이고, 짧은 검정 곱슬머리에 보통 키라고 하셨나요?

Ms. Smith: 네, 그래요. 짧은 검정머리의 중년여성이에요.
